Overview

Do you and your students know what maths they will need for their university courses in STEM and Social Science subjects?

Do you have students who might need to take a maths admissions assessment such as TMUA, MAT, AEA or STEP?

Are you feeling that you would like to know more about how you can support their applications and transition to university?

Next Steps for your A level students is a four week live online professional development course which will provide you with all the support and information you need to ensure you are up to date on typical requirements for a wide range of courses and to gain confidence in supporting all your students in making choices, applications and preparing for assessments.

Aims

  • To consider evidence and reflect on the way we support students to make choices about further study, particularly in STEM and Social Sciences
  • To consider the elements of an effective UCAS Personal Statement
  • To explore ways of enriching the mathematical experience of all A level Mathematics students
  • To acquire an overview of the current situation with regard to Admissions Assessments for Universities (AAU) with mathematical content
  • To explore questions from mathematics AAU papers and consider progression from AS level through to STEP

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers who are working with sixth form students as they are considering their next steps beyond A levels (and Core Maths).

Content

The following content will be covered across the 4 sessions

  • Overview of the mathematics in STEM and Social Science degrees
  • Ideas for enrichment to support problem solving
  • Admissions assessments - what are they, who might take them, and how can teachers prepare students for these?
  • Supporting students with UCAS applications

There will be a short gap task to have a look at between each of the sessions.

Materials and equipment

During online sessions, we give delegates opportunities to discuss ideas with each other in breakout rooms. Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so we strongly encourage the use of microphones and webcams.

Participant feedback

I gained a good insight in to the differences between the university admissions tests. I now have an increased confidence in how I can support students in preparing for these challenging questions. Furthermore, I took away a lot of useful and impactful strategies to promote student progression into Maths based university courses.
It’s always a joy to work on admissions tests problems with teaching colleagues because one gains different perspectives on a problem, learns new problem-solving tricks, and finds sheer pleasure in working on maths away from the vicissitudes of the day job.
This was a superb and well put together course - well done AMSP, you never fail to impress and inspire.
