Overview

Our acclaimed annual four-day summer school is designed for teachers who have studied mathematics to at least an A level standard, but have little or no experience of teaching A level Mathematics. It is run as a face-to-face residential course in York in conjunction with the National STEM Learning Centre.

The course will be held over the following 4 days. Participants must be able to attend all days in full.

The course will focus on developing your pedagogical knowledge to help improve your teaching skills and give you the confidence to teach A level content for understanding and engagement, rather than just ‘teaching to the test’. You will experience a range of teaching techniques delivered through 11 sessions: seven featuring topics from pure mathematics, two from mechanics and two from statistics. You will also plan and deliver a team-taught twenty minute lesson.

Please note that this course is designed for teachers who are comfortable with the mathematical content of the first year of A level Mathematics. If you want support with the subject knowledge element of A level Mathematics please consider alternative courses such as Teaching A level Mathematics (TAM) or Subject Knowledge Live | AS Maths: Pure Absolute Beginners.

Aims

  • To introduce you to a range of strategies for teaching A level Mathematics.
  • To deepen your pedagogical content knowledge in key areas of the A level curriculum.
  • To develop your understanding of how key concepts that underpin A level Mathematics are linked together across the subject.

Who will benefit from attending?

  • Teachers who are comfortable with the mathematical content of the first year of A level Mathematics and would like to develop their teaching strategies.
  • Teachers who have just completed their initial teacher training programme and are about to take up their first post. There is an expectation that you will be teaching A level Mathematics from September.
  • Teachers who are new to teaching A level Mathematics, i.e. have no more than three years' experience of teaching it.

Content

The course covers a variety of teaching strategies for A level Mathematics:

  • Building upon previous learning
  • Encouraging learning through discussion
  • Teacher-centred use of technology
  • Student-centred use of technology
  • Questioning
  • Using multiple representations
  • Making connections
  • Modelling in statistics
  • Using real data in statistics
  • Practical approaches in mechanics
  • Modelling in mechanics

Eligibility

All teachers who will be teaching A level Mathematics from September are eligible to apply for this course.

Due to our funding arrangements with the DfE, priority will be given to teachers in state-funded schools, colleges and academies in England. Teachers from other schools and colleges may be put on to a waiting list.

Participant feedback

All sessions were incredibly valuable, and extremely well organised. I now feel much more confident in teaching A level, but will also take away strategies that will have a huge impact on my teaching throughout the school.
It was excellent. I especially liked the focus on pedagogy rather than subject knowledge.
