Maths underpins machine learning and AI. Equipping young people with high-level maths skills is essential for AI-related careers and the future economy. A new AMSP programme will raise awareness of the links between maths and AI and develop understanding of related areas, such as data modelling and its applications. The aims are to

  • enrich the teaching of Level 3 maths
  • equip teachers to promote AI careers
  • provide students and teachers the opportunity to learn about the role of maths and statistics in AI and machine learning.

Who will benefit from the Maths into AI programme?

This programme will build on already successful work by the AMSP and MEI. There will be an opportunity for up to 300 teachers teaching Level 3 maths and up to 60 teachers teaching Computing/Computer Science to take part in online and face-to-face professional development. At the same time, up to 450 students – studying Level 3 maths or another Level 3 qualification with a quantitative or computing element – can study a live online, assessed course. All the activity is fully funded so comes at no cost to participating schools and colleges.

What is involved?

We will offer teachers five online twilight professional development sessions, along with one face-to-face study day. The content will focus squarely on introducing the maths and statistics underpinning machine learning and AI, and will explore topics such as predictive modelling and the use of technology.

For students, a new course will be available which builds on MEI’s popular Data Science Taught CourseIntroduction to data science, machine learning and AI. The course will be taught online across a term and assessed through the submission of a practical task plus a 60-minute written exam. Successful students will be awarded a certificate from MEI, and can reference this in university applications. During the course, students will learn about topics such as training and testing data, and bias in machine learning.

The aims of both the teacher and student elements of the programme are to improve confidence and skills in working with data, and to ensure that teachers and students understand and value the role of maths in an AI career.

When does the Maths into AI programme start?

There will be three cohorts of teacher participants, starting respectively in October 2025, January 2026 and April 2026.

For students there will also be three cohorts, with courses starting in September 2025 and January 2026 (two cohorts). The overall programme will run initially until summer 2026.

How can schools get involved?

We’ll publish information about how to apply for the Maths into AI programme on the AMSP website in due course. Teachers of Level 3 Maths/Computing who are interested in this programme should sign up to stay informed. Students should ask their Maths/Computing teacher to get in touch. For more information about all the support available from the AMSP, search our website or contact us.
