COURSE OVERVIEW

A comprehensive course for Year 12 students interested in applying to study Mathematics, Mathematical Sciences or other highly mathematics-dependent courses at University.

The course prepares students to think effectively for success in problem-solving mathematics examinations such as TMUA and STEP. It develops their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.

It is provided in partnership with six British universities: The University of Oxford, Imperial College London, Durham University, The University of Bath, The University of Manchester and The University of Warwick.

It will introduce mathematical problems at the difficulty level of the University Admissions Test and provide information about the requirements of applicants for a maths or maths-rich undergraduate degree. Students will also develop their problem-solving skills, so they have confidence in applying for universities that require admissions tests.

Study days will focus on specific problem-solving skills that students will need to develop, featuring workshops where undergraduate and postgraduate mentors from the hosting university will support students.

3 face-to-face study days, 3 summer assignments and 4 online follow-up sessions

The study days will be held at six different venues; students are asked to select the venue that is closest to them.

Please ensure you are available to attend all three days before applying for the course.

Please note: priority will be given to students who are from underrepresented groups in higher education.

The course consists of three face-to-face study days, three summer assignments and four online follow-up sessions.

I feel more ready for any type of questions that might come up on my admissions test. They covered a good range of MAT and TMUA questions & how to deal with them. Tutors are nice and supportive.

Your common questions and concerns answered

Any student who wishes to apply for a university that requires or accepts the TMUA admissions tests will benefit from attending. As well as students who are anticipating sitting the STEP examination.

Please note that the course is not suitable for GCSE students.

The DfE provides funding so that places on this course are free to students from state-funded schools and colleges in England. Other students are not accepted onto this course.

Places on this course are limited. As part of the process, we will prioritise students from groups who are under-represented in higher education.

If we have been able to allocate you a place, you should hear from us within 21 days of the date you submitted your application. If you do not hear from us within this time, you will have been placed on the waiting list.

The study days take place on Saturdays, with the approximate timings of arrival from 9:00 am, to end at the latest 4.00 pm.

Each day will focus on specific problem-solving skills that students will need to develop, featuring workshops where students will be supported by mentors from the hosting university.

Study day 1 focuses on calculus, indices, logarithms and combinatorics

Study day 2 focuses on logical reasoning, trigonometry and geometry

Study day 3 focuses on curve sketching, sequences and series and functions

Between study days 2 and 3, students will attempt three summer activities based on the materials from study days 1 and 2

No – the study days itinerary is identical at all venues, and applicants are asked to select the venue that is in the best geographic location for them. There will be no difference in content.

Applicants may be offered a place at an alternative venue if their first choice of venue reaches capacity.

No – We regret that we will be unable to provide financial support for travel costs. Please take this into account when making your venue choices.

You are more likely to be allocated to your first-choice university if you apply as early as possible for this course.

Please ensure you include your second and third choice of venue within your application.

We particularly recommend looking at our Preparation for the TMUA courses, which are offered as live online courses as well as on-demand versions.

No – Lunch will not be provided on study days. We recommend that students bring their own packed lunch as it is often difficult to purchase lunches on the day.
