At the beginning of the year, you may have students starting their Core Maths course but are struggling with the move from GCSE to Core Maths. Some students may lack confidence in key skills, may have only encountered the Foundation tier content, or maybe trying to get to grips with the context comprehension and problem-solving skills needed for the Core Maths course.
Or, you may be a new Core Maths teacher and getting to grips with the change from teaching GCSE or A level yourself.
If so, our new Warm Up resources hosted on the Core Maths Platform could be just what you’re looking for.
What are the Warm Up resources?
The Warm Up resources are a series of new resources hosted on the Core Maths Platform. The resources involve class-based activities to support students who are working towards a Core Maths qualification. In particular, those who have previously achieved a grade 4 or 5 in GCSE Mathematics. The resources will ensure that all students, not just those with a grade 4 or 5, have a firm grasp of the underpinning skills and knowledge needed for the Core Maths course. The resources have been developed with input from Core Maths specialists and teachers. We will publish new resources throughout the year on a regular basis.
Each Warm Up is roughly one guided learning hour, and there will be 25 Warm Ups in total.
You can explore our Warm Up resources already available, which include comprehensive teacher guidance, a teacher PowerPoint and accompanying student sheets on the following topics:
- Estimation
- Percentages
- Representing and interpreting data
- Measures of location and spread
- Correlation
Each Warm Up includes the following, set in relevant contexts:
- A skills check section to assess pre-requisite knowledge
- Two or three activities for teachers to use with students to build up their knowledge and skills
- At a minimum, a teacher PPT, teacher guidance and accompanying student sheets.

The Warm Up resources can be found in each of the specification courses on the Core Maths Platform after the Getting Started activities. You can see below an example from the AQA Core Maths: 2A Statistical Techniques course:
