COURSE OVERVIEW
Supporting experienced A level Mathematics educators to strengthen classroom practice, deepen students’ conceptual understanding and influence pedagogy across their department.
Run in partnership by Maths Hubs and the AMSP, each Work Group is an ongoing collaboration between teachers from local schools and colleges, led by an expert in maths professional development.
During the Work Group, you will discuss teaching approaches, collaboratively plan and trial ideas between sessions, and reflect on how these approaches can deepen students’ understanding. You will explore effective approaches to teaching A level Mathematics, with a focus on representations, graphs and mathematical thinking across the Key Stage 5 curriculum, helping teachers develop resources and strategies that prepare students effectively for assessment.
The Work Groups are shaped by participants’ needs and interests, which may include a focus on Pure, Statistics or Mechanics. It is particularly useful for teachers who have already completed AS/A level Mathematics professional development and now want to support colleagues and lead the development of A level pedagogy in their own school or college.
The programme is the equivalent of 3 days, either online or blended.
Schools and colleges must be able to commit to the full programme when applying.
We recommend that you are also supported by your school or college leadership to share and embed outcomes from the Work Group with colleagues in their department.

This Work Group is suitable for existing leaders of A level teaching or experienced teachers of A level Mathematics who want to lead the development of pedagogy with colleagues in their own or other schools and colleges.
The Work Group is particularly useful if you have previously completed AS/A level Mathematics professional development and want to influence your department’s approach to A level teaching in the future.
Schools and colleges must commit to the full programme, including three days, or equivalent, of Work Group sessions, classroom/practice-based activity, and support for participants to share outcomes with colleagues.
The Work Group focuses on collaborative discussion, planning, trialling ideas between sessions and evaluation.
Each Maths Hub will develop a local theme that complements the overarching priorities of problem solving, equity and oracy, and the development of classroom practice for A level Mathematics. Themes may also focus on mathematical thinking and the exploration of representations and graphs across the Key Stage 5 curriculum, with flexibility to include Pure, Statistics, or Mechanics based on participants’ needs and interests.
