COURSE OVERVIEW
Supporting teachers to develop confident, effective approaches to teaching Core Maths.
These Work Groups are designed for teachers who are in at least their second year of teaching Core Maths and want to strengthen how they teach mathematical concepts and processes effectively through contextualised problem-solving.
Run in partnership by Maths Hubs and the AMSP, each Work Group brings together teachers from local schools and colleges to collaborate with an expert in maths professional development. During the Work Group, participants will discuss teaching approaches, collaboratively plan and trial ideas between sessions, and reflect on how these approaches can improve students’ reasoning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Work Group focuses on applying the Core Maths ethos in the classroom, helping teachers develop resources and strategies that prepare students effectively for assessment while keeping learning rooted in meaningful, real-world contexts. You will be encouraged to share outcomes with departmental colleagues, supporting the wider role of Core Maths in post-16 mathematics provision.
The programme is the equivalent of 3 days, either online or blended.
Schools and colleges must be able to commit to the full programme when applying.

This Work Group is for experienced and developing teachers of Core Maths who are in at least their second year of teaching Core Maths.
Schools and colleges must commit to the full programme, including three days, or equivalent, of Work Group sessions, classroom/practice-based activity, and support for participants to share outcomes with colleagues.
The Work Group focuses on collaborative discussion, planning, trialling ideas between sessions and evaluation. Each Maths Hub will have a local theme varying from contextualised problem solving, critical analysis, equity and oracy through to participant interests.
